Mining Rig - What Is It?

Mining Rig - What Is It?

Table of Contents

A computer case has limited slots for graphics cards, and under high loads, they require additional ventilation. Therefore, special structures called rigs have emerged, allowing the combination of 4-6 graphics cards while providing effective cooling. A rig is a frame on which all necessary equipment is mounted.

A mining farm can consist of any number of rigs, but the limit of a single rig is restricted by the fact that you can't connect too many graphics cards to one motherboard. A rig consists of:

  • motherboard, preferably with six slots;
  • graphics cards;
  • processor - since it doesn't affect the rig's performance, usually cheaper models are chosen, especially since even if it fails, it's enough to replace it, and the setup will work again;
  • RAM - 8 GB is sufficient, although over time the requirements for its volume grow, but if the graphics cards have enough memory, there will likely be no need to buy more;
  • hard drive or SSD - its capacity doesn't affect performance, so 32 GB is enough;
  • power supply unit - the power should be calculated depending on the number and requirements of the graphics cards, usually not less than 1000 watts, sometimes two units are included in the setup;
  • necessary cables and adapters;
  • rig frame - it can be purchased (fully assembled rigs are also available) or built independently, the structure is quite simple, and the material can be metal or particleboard.
