Cold Storage of Cryptocurrencies – What Is It?

Cold Storage of Cryptocurrencies – What Is It?

Table of Contents

There are two options for storing cryptocurrency – cold and hot storage. In the first case, funds are stored without an internet connection, which makes operations with them more difficult, but provides increased security. Accordingly, hot storage is connected to the internet. Hot storage is better suited for trading, while cold storage is preferable for long-term holding. It's worth noting that cryptocurrency is actually stored on the blockchain in any case, and storage devices, also known as wallets, only contain access data for it.

For better protection of the portion of your cryptocurrency that you don't plan to use for trading in the near future, it's best to use a cold wallet – usually, hardware devices such as Trezor or ColdCard are purchased for this purpose. When you need access to the cryptocurrency stored on them, you'll need to connect them to a computer and enter a code, while the devices themselves are securely protected against malware intrusion.

Hardware wallets are specifically designed for storing cryptocurrency, so they are very reliable and can work without failures for many years – the main thing is to buy well-known models through official channels, or better yet, directly from the manufacturer. There have been cases where wallets from lesser-known manufacturers turned out to be vulnerable.

Although a hardware wallet is very reliable, to ensure that you not only preserve your funds but also maintain access to them, it can be supplemented with a steel wallet, such as Billfodl. It contains a seed – a phrase that can be used to restore access if necessary. The seed is engraved on stainless steel, so you can be confident that nothing will happen to it. Measures to ensure access for yourself are very important, as most cases of cryptocurrency loss occur not due to fraudsters, but due to the owner's carelessness.
